How to check if your name is lucky: name numerology with a worked example
Quick answer
Turn each letter of your name into a number with the Chaldean table (A is 1, B is 2, C is 3, D is 4, E is 5, F is 8 and so on), add them up and reduce to one digit. That is your name number, or naamank. Then compare it with your mulank and bhagyank: a name number that gets on with both is a good fit. Priya Sharma is 8 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 3 + 5 + 1 + 2 + 4 + 1 = 29, then 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.

The Chaldean letter table
Chaldean numerology gives every letter of the alphabet a value from 1 to 8. Here is the table NumeroGyan uses.
| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, I, J, Q, Y |
| 2 | B, K, R |
| 3 | C, G, L, S |
| 4 | D, M, T |
| 5 | E, H, N, X |
| 6 | U, V, W |
| 7 | O, Z |
| 8 | F, P |
There is no 9. The tradition treats 9 as sacred and gives it to no letter, though a name can still add up to a 9. The Pythagorean system uses a different table, and the two give different numbers for many names, so a calculator that does not say which it uses is not giving you much.
A worked example: Priya Sharma
Write the name out letter by letter with each value.
| P | R | I | Y | A | S | H | A | R | M | A | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 3 | 5 | 1 | 2 | 4 | 1 |
Priya adds up to 8 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 13. Sharma adds up to 3 + 5 + 1 + 2 + 4 + 1 = 16.
Together that is 13 + 16 = 29. This two-digit total is the compound number. Reduce it: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. The name number is 2.
Two more numbers come from the same name. Adding only the vowels gives the soul urge, and adding only the consonants gives the personality number.
- Soul urge. The vowels in Priya Sharma are I, Y, A, A and A, so 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5.
- Personality. The consonants are P, R, S, H, R and M, so 8 + 2 + 3 + 5 + 2 + 4 = 24, then 2 + 4 = 6.
All of these were calculated by the same function NumeroGyan uses.
The Y rule
Y is the awkward letter, because it is a vowel in some words and a consonant in others, and a calculator has to pick.
NumeroGyan’s rule is simple. A Y at the start of a word is a consonant. A Y anywhere else is a vowel. Compare two names.
- Yash Rao. The Y starts the word, so it is a consonant. Soul urge A + A + O = 1 + 1 + 7 = 9. Personality Y + S + H + R = 1 + 3 + 5 + 2 = 11, which stays 11. The soul urge and personality number keep master numbers.
- Ayush Rao. The Y follows a letter, so it is a vowel. Soul urge A + Y + U + A + O = 1 + 1 + 6 + 1 + 7 = 16, then 7. Personality S + H + R = 3 + 5 + 2 = 10, then 1.
Same letters, mostly, and different numbers. That is why the rule matters.
The name number itself, unlike the soul urge and personality number, is always reduced to a single digit.
Which spelling counts
The spelling on your documents. Chaldean values exist only for the letters A to Z, so NumeroGyan asks for your name in plain Latin letters exactly as it is written on your passport or school records. It never transliterates for you, because राहुल could be Rahul or Raahul, and that choice changes the number.
A few smaller rules:
- Dots, apostrophes and hyphens are ignored.
- Digits count at face value, so “Rahul 2” is 17 + 2 = 19.
- Spaces count for nothing.
Full name, first name or called name?
Most people use more than one version of their name. Your full name is on your documents, your first name is what colleagues write, and many people go by something shorter. NumeroGyan can check all three layers: the full name, the first name, and a called name if it differs from both. In our example, the full name Priya Sharma and the first name Priya give different totals, 29 and 13, which means they can score differently against the same birth numbers. For a 14 March 1992 birth date, NumeroGyan rates the full name a good fit and the first name alone as mixed.
Is it “lucky”?
“Lucky” is the word people search for, and it is not quite what a name number tells you. A name number is judged against your birth numbers: the name is a fit if its number gets on with your mulank and your bhagyank, as we explained in our guide to the three birth numbers. The idea is that a name which works with your birth numbers supports you, and one that clashes pulls against you.
There is a second layer. In Cheiro’s tradition, the two-digit compound, here 29, is read for its own meaning before it reduces. NumeroGyan’s check looks at the compound as well as the single digit, and it flags the compound in our example for caution.
None of this is proven. Numerology is a tradition, not a measurement. Use a name check to decide whether a name feels right for you. If someone tells you a spelling will change your career, your marriage or your money, that is a promise no number can keep.
What you can do now
Work out your own name number from the table above, then compare it with your mulank and bhagyank. If you want the check done for you, NumeroGyan scores your name against your birth numbers for free, and only offers spelling ideas if the name does not fit. Those ideas cost coins.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate my name number?
Give each letter its Chaldean value, add the values for your whole name, and reduce the total to one digit. Priya Sharma adds up to 29, which reduces to 2.
Is Chaldean or Pythagorean numerology better for names?
Neither can be proven better. They use different letter tables and give different numbers for many names. NumeroGyan uses Chaldean throughout.
Why is there no 9 in the Chaldean table?
In the Chaldean tradition, 9 is treated as a special, sacred number and no letter is assigned to it. Your total can still reduce to 9.
Does Y count as a vowel or a consonant?
In NumeroGyan, a Y at the start of a word is a consonant, as in Yash, and a Y anywhere else is a vowel, as in Ayush or Priya.
Which spelling of my name should I use?
The spelling on your documents. A name in Hindi script can be written in more than one Latin spelling, and the spelling changes the number, so NumeroGyan asks for the Latin spelling and never transliterates for you.
What is a compound number in name numerology?
It is the two-digit total before the final reduction, such as 29 before it becomes 2. In Cheiro's tradition the compound is read for its own meaning as well as the single digit.
