Mulank, bhagyank and life path number: the difference, and how to calculate each
Quick answer
Mulank is your birth day reduced to one digit. Bhagyank is your whole date of birth added up and reduced to one digit. Life path is the same sum as bhagyank, except that it keeps 11, 22 and 33 instead of reducing them. For most dates the two are identical, and where they differ it is by exactly that master number: 11 becomes 2, 22 becomes 4 and 33 becomes 6. Example, 14 March 1992: mulank 5, bhagyank 2, life path 11.

The three numbers in one table
All three come from your date of birth. We will use 14 March 1992 all the way through.
| Number | Other names | Built from | 14 March 1992 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mulank | Moolank, Driver, birth number | The birth day only | 5 |
| Bhagyank | Destiny number, Conductor | The whole date, reduced to 1 to 9 | 2 |
| Life path | Life path number | The whole date, keeping 11, 22 and 33 | 11 |
The first thing to notice is the last row. Bhagyank and life path are two names for nearly the same sum, and here they already disagree. The rest of this page explains why.
How to calculate mulank
Take the day you were born and add its digits until one digit is left.
- 14th: 1 + 4 = 5. Mulank 5.
- 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. Mulank 2.
- 10th, 20th, 30th: the zero adds nothing, so these are 1, 2 and 3.
Notice the 29th: its digits pass through 11 on the way to 2. Mulank is always reduced to a single digit, so the answer is 2, not 11. The month and the year have no part in it.
How to calculate bhagyank
Write the whole date as digits, add them all, and keep adding until one digit is left.
For 14 March 1992 the digits are 1, 4, 3, 1, 9, 9, 2.
1 + 4 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 29. Then 2 + 9 = 11. Then 1 + 1 = 2.
Bhagyank is 2. Like mulank, it is always reduced all the way to a single digit.
Three more dates, calculated by the same function NumeroGyan uses:
| Date | Mulank | Bhagyank | Life path |
|---|---|---|---|
| 29 November 1992 | 2 | 7 | 7 |
| 2 September 1990 | 2 | 3 | 3 |
| 10 October 1980 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
Is life path the same as bhagyank?
Almost. They use the same digits and the same sum. The one difference is what happens when the running total lands on 11, 22 or 33, the master numbers.
- Bhagyank carries on and reduces them: 11 becomes 2, 22 becomes 4, 33 becomes 6.
- Life path stops and keeps the master number.
In our example the total reached 29, then 11. Life path stops there and reads 11. Bhagyank goes on to 2.
How often does this happen? We ran every valid date from 1 January 1900 to 31 December 2030, 47,847 dates in all, through the app’s own calculation. For 84.2% of them, life path and bhagyank were the same number. For the other 15.8%, 7,579 dates, they differed, and every single difference was a master number:
| Life path | Bhagyank | Dates |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | 2 | 3,748 |
| 22 | 4 | 1,908 |
| 33 | 6 | 1,923 |
There was no date where life path and bhagyank differed for any other reason. So if a calculator tells you your bhagyank is 2 and your life path is 11, nothing is wrong. They are reading the same sum two ways.
Why websites give you different answers
If you have tried two calculators and got two numbers, check these first.
- Master numbers. Whether a site keeps or reduces 11, 22 and 33 is the biggest cause. Ask which number it is really showing.
- Which number it is. Many Indian sites use bhagyank and life path as if they were one thing. Western sites often show only life path.
- How the sum is built. Some calculators add the digits of the whole date, as above. Others reduce the day, the month and the year separately first. The method is usually the same in the end, but master numbers can come out differently. If a site shows its working, read it.
- A mistyped year. It sounds silly, but one wrong digit in the year changes the answer.
Our own convention is simple and written down: mulank and bhagyank are always one digit from 1 to 9, and life path keeps 11, 22 and 33.
Which one should you read first?
Traditions disagree, and nobody can prove one right. A common idea is that mulank describes how you are wired and how you come across, while bhagyank describes the direction your life takes. NumeroGyan follows that idea: the mulank leads while you are younger, and from about 35 the life path leads, with a gradual shift through the thirties. If you want a rule of thumb, read the mulank for your temperament, then the bhagyank or life path for where you are heading, and notice where the two agree.
A note on the words
You may see these spelled many ways: mulank, moolank, mool ank, bhagyank, bhagyaank. In Hindi they are मूलांक and भाग्यांक. Your name number is naamank (नामांक), and it is calculated from the letters of your name, not your date. We cover it separately.
A limit worth stating
None of these numbers is a measurement of anything. They are a tradition for reflecting on yourself. If your mulank is 5, that does not mean you will be restless, and a 4 is not a warning. Use the descriptions to ask whether any of it sounds like you, and ignore whatever does not.
Questions people ask
Is life path number the same as mulank or bhagyank?
It is the same as bhagyank, apart from master numbers. Mulank is a different number: it comes from your birth day alone.
What is the difference between mulank and bhagyank?
Mulank (moolank, the Driver) uses only the day you were born. Bhagyank (the Conductor) uses the day, the month and the year.
How do I calculate mulank?
Add the digits of your birth day until you have one digit. The 14th is 1 + 4 = 5. The 29th is 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.
How do I calculate bhagyank?
Write your full date as digits, add them all, and keep adding until you have one digit. 14 March 1992 is 1 + 4 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 29, then 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2.
Which is more important, mulank or bhagyank?
Traditions differ. NumeroGyan treats the Driver as the leading number early in life and the life path as the leading number from about 35, with the shift happening gradually through the thirties.
Does a zero in my date count?
A zero adds nothing to a sum, so it makes no difference to the result.
